Unlike artists who putter with pencils and paint from the time they're young, Shaman, who was born in Laramie, Wyo., didn't dabble in art until he took a few art courses in high school.  "I couldn't get painting to do what I wanted it to do," he said.  "I kept trying to stick things onto the canvas."  Shallow carvings were next, followed by stone carving and bronze casting.  It wasn't until he earned a master's degree in art and taught 10 years of art at Delta State University that Shaman found his identity as an artist in wood sculpting.

"I went to New York on the Greyhound and began knocking on gallery doors," he said.  Seven years of persistence paid off.  Today, Shaman's work is reviewed by publications like The New York Times, New York Guide and Art Voices South.  His sculpture is shown in gallerys in New York, Memphis, San Antonio, Nashville, and Vicksburg.
